However, because the retail price for sat phones can run into the thousands of dollars, renting a phone may prove to be a better option for many people. This article gives a brief overview of how to rent a satellite phone.

Rather than spend many hundreds or thousands of dollars on a handset that you may only use occasionally, satellite rental plans provide people access to satellite phones for as little as 35 to 70 dollars a week. This may seem like a lot compared to traditional cell phone rates, but renting for a short time is much cheaper than actually purchasing a satellite phone.

To rent one of these sat phones, you first need to contact the company of your choice. Do a web search of satellite rental companies and compare different plans for current pricing options, since there might be some that are even cheaper than 35 dollars per week. Once you have made a decision on the plan you want, you can then contact the company directly.

You can contact most companies for more information through an online contact form, by email or by phone. They will often reserve dates that you will need the phone to guarantee you a unit is available when you come in to rent it.

There is usually a lengthy application and contract form you will need to fill out and sign. Once you have filled it in, and the contract has the proper dates and signatures on it, you can be fax or emailed it in with the requested identification. To qualify for a rental phone some form of identification will need to be verified by the company. Acceptable forms of I.D. include a copy of a passport, military ID, state issued I.D. card or a driver's license. After you submit it, you should call the company to confirm that they received the fax. When it is all processed and approved, the phone will then be mailed to you on the date you need it. After you are done using the phone, you simply mail it back to the rental company.
