Highland Park Elementary School has been recognized with the Gold Award of Distinction by the U.S Department of Agriculture for its efforts in the HealthierUS School Challenge, according to Betsy Speer, Muscle Shoals city schools child nutrition program director.
Highland Park Principal Hal Horton said the award has special significance because it involves every student as well as all personnel and even parents.
“To receive the award, new menus were developed to include many more healthy foods, like whole grains, dark green and orange vegetables and fresh fruits,” Horton said. “Teachers are focusing on nutrition education using the creative and fun My Pyramid curriculum, and we're emphasizing physical activity throughout the school.”
Horton said the project carries over into the students' homes, where parents have gotten involved in helping their children keep logs of their healthy food choices and physical activity.
Last week, there was a schoolwide recognition ceremony where the school received $2,000, an award plaque and banner to display at the school.
The program's mascot, NutriBear, visited with students before the school day, congratulating them on their nutritional accomplishments.
“This is an exciting program for these students, and they've seen the rewards of making healthy food choices and being active,” Speer said. “We're starting this program with these younger children, first- and second-graders, in an effort to train their taste buds for healthy foods.”
