Internet-connected coffee maker has security holes

An Australian man has discovered security vulnerabilities in his Internet-connected coffee maker that could allow a remote attacker to not only take over his Windows XP-based PC but also make his coffee too weak.

Craig Wright, a risk advisory services manager at professional services firm BDO, found several security holes, including a buffer overflow in the Internet Connection software that links his Jura F90 coffee maker to his PC.

Once connected to the Internet, the high-end coffee maker, which retails for nearly US$2,000 on Amazon, lets you do things like set the strength of your coffee and get remote diagnostic help over the Internet without having to send the appliance in for service.

Wright posted the information on the vulnerabilities, and the fact that there is no patch available yet, to the BugTraq security e-mail list on Tuesday.

A U.S.-based public relations representative for the coffee maker said she would try to reach spokespeople in the Switzerland headquarters for comment.

The threat hasn't kept Wright awake at night, although the coffee does, he said in an interview with CNET News.com at 2:30 Wednesday morning Sydney time.

"I don't know if many people would target this particular vulnerability because there probably are not a lot of coffee makers at the moment that are Internet-connected, and in my case it's behind a firewall," he said.

Diabetes Diet

Regulating food intake is a crucial component of any diabetes treatment. Controlling the symptoms is dependent on your body’s ability to balance blood glucose levels, which can only be done if you eat the right amounts and types of food.

Goals for a Diabetic Diet

In general, a diabetes diet is not very different from the healthy, balanced diet doctors encourage for everyone. It is high in fiber and protein and low in fat, with an overall balance of nutrients. The difference is that diabetics need to be extra careful about their sugar intake, and therefore foods like carbohydrates and sweets need to be limited.

As a diabetic, the major goals you should try to achieve through your dietary habits are:

  • Balancing your blood glucose levels: Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, you will generally be given insulin or other medications to help your body break down sugar into energy. That is why you need to be sure your calorie intake is balanced with the medications, so that your body’s sugar level doesn’t rise or drop dramatically.

  • Healthy lipid levels: Too much fat in your body can be dangerous and therefore your aim has to be to maintain a healthy level of cholesterol and triglycerides in the body, which also ensure the heart’s safety.

  • Maintaining a healthy weight: Being overweight only exacerbates symptoms of diabetes, which is why doctors always stress maintaining a healthy body weight.

  • Avoiding complications: Diabetes has been known to trigger other diseases related to the heart, kidney, eyes, and feet. By following a strict diabetes diet you can avoid these complications.

Nutritional needs

Here is a guide to some of the common food components that need to be monitored on a diabetic diet:

Proteins
When compared to fats and carbohydrates, proteins are a considered to be a safe choice for diabetic diets, since they do not raise the blood sugar level like carbohydrates, or supply high calories like fats. Experts suggest that for a diabetic, proteins should provide around 12% to 20% of the daily caloric intake. Each gram of protein is equivalent to 4 calories and it is usually recommended as a bedtime snack to maintain the glucose level. One of the richest sources of proteins is fish, which can be taken as one or two servings in a week. Other protein rich food products are soy and lentils.

Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates comprise the highest source of blood sugar. But in spite of abounding advice to the contrary, it is not true all diabetes patients should completely eliminate carbohydrates and sugars from their diet. In fact, doctors recommend that carbs account for 40%-60% of your daily caloric intake.

The carbohydrates that we consume are generally one of of two types. The complex ones found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and starches and the simple ones found in table sugar and processed foods. For a diabetic diet, complex carbohydrates from vegetables and whole grains are best, as they take more time to break down and contain fiber, which is extremely important for preventing heart disease, promoting weight loss and preventing type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, starchy foods like potatoes and pasta, while still necessary, should be limited. Simple carbs, however, should be avoided.

Review: Pioneer PRV-9200 Professional DVD Recorder

Synopsis: While not in the same league as its industrial PRV-LX1 cousin, Pioneer's PRV-9200 ($1,025) is a tremendously useful tool in its own right. Its relative simplicity is welcome and its large built-in hard drive, high-speed DVD recorder, and rudimentary editing abilities are well-suited for all manner of work including budget projects, videotape and camcorder conversions, broadcast capture, and banging out quick proofs-of-concept and prototypes.

For those seeking some simplicity in creating DVD projects, Pioneer has just the ticket with its new PRV-9200 professional DVD-Video recorder. Targeted at videographers, corporations, schools, conversion bureaus, and the like, the PRV-9200 offers a flexible way to create straightforward DVD-Video titles without the hassles, time, or expense involved in computer-attached DVD recording.

As a set-top device, the PRV-9200 incorporates (limited) DVD-Video encoding, authoring, and writing capabilities in a single box that attaches to a monitor or TV. Available connections include VHF/UHF I/O, S-Video, composite video, L/R analog audio I/O, component video out, optical digital audio out, and DV/IEEE-1394 I/O. Thus, possible input sources include everything from VCRs, camcorders (analog and DV), and other DVDs down to terrestrial TV and satellite broadcasts.

Setting the PRV-9200 apart from the average home unit is an integrated 160GB hard drive, high-speed 8X DVD-R/4X DVD-RW recorder (Double Layer and "+" discs are not supported), 3-prong detachable power cord, and its ability to work with NTSC and PAL signals (conversion between them isn't offered, and written discs can't contain different TV line systems).

The Atkins Diet Debate

Dr. Atkins revolutionalized the dieting world when he introduced the Atkins diet, a low-carb eating program. The Atkins diet or the ‘Atkins Nutritional Approach’ is a lifetime nutritional philosophy. The diet claims that you can lose weight on a high-fat, high-protein diet. It works on the premise that a healthy lifestyle requires a limited amount of simple carbohydrates, protein, exercise and proper portion control.

The diet plan works on 4 general principles; weight loss, weight maintenance, good health and disease prevention. Today, the Atkins diet is the most popular, longstanding approach to weight loss in America. Over 40 million people around the world have joined in on the Atkins revolution and more than 15 million overweight men and women have bought Dr. Atkins’ best selling book ‘New Diet Revolution’. There is even a professional body (The Atkins Centre for Complimentary Medicine) devoted to educating Atkins followers.

How does the diet work?

The Atkins diet holds the controversial belief that low fat is not the only way to go for a healthier lifestyle and weight control. Dr. Atkins blamed carbohydrates (grains, pastas, fruits, potatoes) for weight gain. He believed that if you reduced your carbohydrate intake then you would lose weight. Too many carbohydrates in your diet encourage your body to retain fat. When the body absorbs simple carbohydrates quickly, it causes an insulin response that speeds the conversion of calories to fat. The plan focuses on the consumption of nutrient-dense, unprocessed foods and vita-nutrient supplementation. It also restricts processed and refined carbohydrates (which make up to approximately more then 50 per cent of people’s diets). It encourages you to eliminate sugar from your diet as this contributes to a slower metabolism. The Atkins diet is designed to be a program on which you can maintain a healthy weight for a lifetime and it is highly suitable (but not restricted) to those who prefer eating animal protein. The diet offers people who have failed on a low-fat diet a healthy, effective and safe alternative. Instead of carbs and sugar, eaters are allowed plenty of fat and protein.

Why Stay at Walt Disney World Hotels?

Are you planning a trip to Disney World? Great! Plenty of fun awaits you and your travel mates. Before you get there, however, you'll need to make plans, including hotel reservations.

There is a dizzying array of lodging choices. You could choose to stay at one of the many Disney World hotels or off property. In almost every case, you'll find a cheaper nightly rate for comparable accommodations--in some cases considerably cheaper--away from Disney. But, you should consider overall costs, including car rental, gas, and parking, as well as the time and hassle it would take to travel between an off-property hotel and the Disney resort. Also consider the following perks.

Benefits of Staying at Disney World Hotels

  • Free Ground Transportation
Guests staying at Disney World hotels can board complimentary Disney's Magical Express buses at the Orlando Airport that take them directly to their resort. And they can avoid the baggage carousel since Disney delivers luggage directly to guests' hotel rooms. On the return trip, which is also free, guests can save time at the airport by checking their luggage and getting their boarding passes at their Disney hotel.
  • Extra Theme Park Hours
Disney World hotel guests can jump-start their day by getting into select parks an hour before the general public. A lot of ground can be covered when the parks are less crowded. Some parks remain open on certain evenings to resort guests up to three hours after closing to the general public.

What's new in Las Vegas? Hotels, bars, shows

Here's the lowdown on the latest on the Strip and elsewhere in Sin City:

  • Fans of professional bull riding know that the Professional Bull Riders' finals are always a draw in Vegas (they start next Wednesday). But many may not know that a PBR Rock Bar and Grill just opened at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. It's the first bar and grill associated with the bull riders. You can chug a beer in eight seconds (the amount of time a rider must stay on a bucking bull for a clean ride) or try your luck on a mechanical toro.
  • Sexy shows are hot, hot, hot, hot, and a powerhouse singer called Lorena Peril (shown below) is dangerously sultry. She just stepped in to headline the topless revue "FANTASY" at the Luxor. Of Middle Eastern and Latin descent, she has been compared to Christina Aguilera. The nightly 10:30 p.m. show includes a caliente salsa and many doffed tops. Not hers, however.
  • Some Harrah's properties have launched a program called "PetStay Las Vegas" that welcomes pooches with canine-friendly rooms and treats, as well as outdoor "relief areas." Caesars Palace, Imperial Palace and Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino are participating. Guests with dogs 50 pounds and under get a room with food and water dishes, disposable waste bags and dog treats. Doggy meals are available from room service. Crates can be rented for use when the owner is out of the room. (Please don't put me next to a barking hound, front desk!) You get the special rooms for $25 a night more at Caesars, $20 at Imperial Palace and Rio.

How can I improve my presentation skills?

I think I could have gotten a job I really wanted if I had given a better presentation of my Ph.D. thesis at an interview. What can I do to improve my presentation skills?

Presentation skills can be improved over time if you think about how you could have done it differently after each presentation. In some cultures, children are encouraged to make speeches at the dinner table, which helps develop their verbal skills. In my culture, children are expected to listen. At first, my talks were rather poor, and I am still working on improving. You might consider joining Toastmasters, a group that helps to improve presentation skills. I also recommend the book Presenting to Win: The Art of Telling Your Story by Jerry Weissman (Prentice Hall 2003).

Pay attention to the preparation, the flow, and the delivery of your presentations. Know your audience, and present the talk from their perspective. Your attitude should be “to serve.” In the case of a job interview, the company is probably more interested in your problem-solving skills than the specifics of your thesis work. Use your thesis to illustrate and accentuate your personal attributes. For example, you may want to weave into the specifics how you successfully obtained the results in ways that were creative and enterprising, and how you worked effectively in a collaborative team environment with limited resources.

During a presentation, it is helpful to the audience to follow the basic organizational strategy: tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you have told them. First decide on a few important messages and “wow” factors. Use the “story” to build your case, reinforcing the key points again and again to make the message stick. Accentuate points that are interesting, rather than getting mired in details. There is always time to add specifics later once you provoke interest.

To improve presentation skills, practice, practice, practice. Speak out loud, maybe in front of a mirror to work on gestures. The more you practice, the more you will build self-confidence and minimize stage fright.

Getting back to that job . . . you may want to ask that hiring person if you can provide supplemental information to reverse the decision. Persistence could be viewed as a positive trait; for sure, you don’t have much to lose, and you may even get some meaningful feedback to improve your next interview.

Shipping containers provide affordable housing

There’s an emerging and innovative solution to the environmental, economic, and housing concerns we face around the globe: shipping container homes. It turns out reusing the old containers is an inexpensive, efficient, and environmentally friendly way to build homes that can be used by low-income residents or as temporary housing following a natural disaster. Architects and humanitarians alike have jumped on the bandwagon to make everything from chic urban spaces and stylish homes to disaster relief and affordable housing.

There are enough shipping containers on earth to build an eight-foot high wall around the equator–twice. Most goods shipped overseas or by train travel in these containers, and many nations import far more containers than they export. Empty containers then accumulate because it is too expensive and wasteful to ship them back to their countries of origin–the United States in particular has a large surplus of containers due to its trade deficit. The containers often become neighborhood nuisances, accumulating in tall stacks and creating eyesores. In some neighborhoods the stacks of containers become so high they even cause the sun to set an hour earlier.

But instead of letting the containers go to waste, they can be used in creative and socially responsible ways. They are particularly well suited for constructing buildings, as they are stackable and their steel walls are durable, fireproof, and resistant to rust, mold, and termites. Shipping container homes can be constructed for far less cost than traditional building methods and use as much as 80 percent recycled materials. The homes can also be prefabricated, a method or a system where the structure or its components are manufactured at a facility and transported to the building site. This reduces the amount of time needed to complete a house, drives down costs, and uses indoor construction, which eliminates interruptions from inclement weather.

One organization utilizing this building technique is PFNC Global communities, which stands for “Por Fin Nuestra Casa,” the Spanish equivalent of “Finally, a Home of Our Own.” PFNC is in the process of launching their one-unit shipping container home business, and they plan to create housing for people currently living in dangerous or insufficient housing situations around the world. They can put together a unit for less than $10,000, and BusinessWeek even took note and named their concept one of the top 20 most important innovations of the next 10 years.

GE gives grants to two community health centers

Two Baltimore-area community health centers are sharing in a grant of $500,000 from the GE Foundation, the philanthropic arm of General Electric Co.

The People's Community Health Centers Inc. in Baltimore will be able to hire a nutritionist and put more resources into its educational programs.

Chase Brexton Health Services Inc. will strengthen programs that treat both a patient's medical and behavioral needs. For example, a person with diabetes can get medication, but will now also be taught how to eat more nutritious foods and can get psychological counseling if needed as well.

The grants are part of $25 million the foundation is giving out as a way to help improve primary care in underserved communities throughout the country.

Baltimore was chosen both because of the need for health care for the needy and because GE has a large presence in the area. The company is also offering up its employees as volunteers as part of the grant package.

GE has about 900 workers at its Middle River Aircraft Systems plant in Baltimore and more than 200 at GE Healthcare Maternal-Infant Care, a Laurel operation that makes incubators, warmers and other products used in labor and delivery.

"We want to help contribute to the impact these health centers are having on the community," said Carrie Eglinton Manner, general manager at GE Healthcare Maternal-Infant Care.

    Forex News Trading

Traders on the Foreign Exchange market, Forex market for short, can potentially make thousands of dollars based on the volatility and fluctuations of a country’s currency. To better themselves and have a leading advantage over other traders, some Forex traders and investors participate in a practice known as news trading. The risks are very high, but the potential gains can be worth thousands of dollars and many traders and investors use this technique.

The technique of news trading is quite simple. It is the trading of foreign currency immediately before or after an important economic news announcement. After such announcements, there is a high possibility that market prices will fluctuate, either for the better or worse, depending on the announcement. For example, if the U. S. Federal Reserve announces another increase of the interest rate, many traders might invest in the U.S. dollar as it is expected that its value will appreciate. The main advantage of news trading is the potential for a country’s currency to make huge gains or losses in very little time. Within minutes of an economic announcement, a country’s currency can gain or lose one hundred points almost instantly. The potential of huge profits attracts Foreign Exchange traders and investors, however there are various risks associated with news trading.

Like any investment, there is always a risk, and news trading on the Forex market is no different. Though the potential profits are huge, the losses are also equally as large. The dangers of news trading come from the fact that a trade must be made quickly or else you are going to lose. If you are caught on the bad side of a trade, your money will be gone quicker than you can blink your eye. You will lose money so fast that there won’t even be time for you to manually close your trades, leaving you with nothing. Stop-loss orders are also potentially dangerous as there is a high probability of slippage because of the sudden price fluctuation.

New York City Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

The New York City Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NYC HANES) is a community-based health survey conducted by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Data was collected from June through December 2004. NYC HANES measured key health indicators in a sample of 1,999 randomly selected NYC adult residents through a detailed health interview and brief physical exam.

NYC HANES is modeled after a similar national survey - the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). NHANES has been conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics for more than 35 years. Information from NHANES has led to important improvements in American health care and nutrition.

The data collected will enable the DOHMH to learn how many New Yorkers suffer from basic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and depression. With this critical information, DOHMH can better direct the City's resources to the health needs of New Yorkers.

How to Rent a Satellite Phon-Satellite phone rental

When taking a trip that requires you to be in very remote locations, it is a good idea to have a reliable source of communication. Satellite phones - also called sat phones - provide that reliability. However, because the retail price for sat phones can run into the thousands of dollars, renting a phone may prove to be a better option for many people. This article gives a brief overview of how to rent a satellite phone.

Rather than spend many hundreds or thousands of dollars on a handset that you may only use occasionally, satellite rental plans provide people access to satellite phones for as little as 35 to 70 dollars a week. This may seem like a lot compared to traditional cell phone rates, but renting for a short time is much cheaper than actually purchasing a satellite phone.

To rent one of these sat phones, you first need to contact the company of your choice. Do a web search of satellite rental companies and compare different plans for current pricing options, since there might be some that are even cheaper than 35 dollars per week. Once you have made a decision on the plan you want, you can then contact the company directly.

You can contact most companies for more information through an online contact form, by email or by phone. They will often reserve dates that you will need the phone to guarantee you a unit is available when you come in to rent it.

There is usually a lengthy application and contract form you will need to fill out and sign. Once you have filled it in, and the contract has the proper dates and signatures on it, you can be fax or emailed it in with the requested identification. To qualify for a rental phone some form of identification will need to be verified by the company. Acceptable forms of I.D. include a copy of a passport, military ID, state issued I.D. card or a driver's license. After you submit it, you should call the company to confirm that they received the fax. When it is all processed and approved, the phone will then be mailed to you on the date you need it. After you are done using the phone, you simply mail it back to the rental company.

    How young athletes practice nutrition

Before he headed off to school, Ben stared into his lunch bag and asked, "Why did Mom pack all this food?"

    "She's Italian," his dad replied.

I'd say she's a smart Italian. Ben's sport schedule is grueling: An hour of weight training 4 days a week; two-hour workouts with his water polo team 5 or 6 days each week; plus games and tournaments. Oh ... and he also carries a full load of high school studies.

What keeps a young athlete growing and going at peak performance? I asked registered dietitian and sports nutritionist Stephanie Bouquet (she's Italian, too). Bouquet provides personalized nutrition consultations and group programs for athletes of all ages. Her basic formula: Provide key nutrients. Timing is everything.

Carbohydrates: "Young athletes need a carbohydrate-rich diet every day to fuel muscles and feed the brain ... not just the day before or the day of a game," Bouquet stresses. She explains that carbohydrates (sugars and starches in food) are stored in the body as glycogen — the readily available energy source for the muscles. If this energy depot is empty or is not replenished after a workout, the muscles become "chronically glycogen depleted" which leads to fatigue and inability to perform. Consume carbohydrates every 3 to 4 hours throughout the day to keep the "carbohydrate tank" refilled, she advises.

Becoming a Law Enforcement Officer in New Jersey

This is an extensive subject. We will introduce the the New Jersey process and lay out some of the different available options.

Okay, in New Jersey there are generally two tracks to becoming a full time regular law enforcement officer:

    NJ Department of Personnel Track
    Chief's Agency Track0

    NJ Department of Personnel Track
The New Jersey Department of Personnel, formerly known as Civil Service, administers the entry level testing for about half of the law enforcement agencies in New Jersey. Generally, test announcements along with applications come out in January and must be returned shortly thereafter. The applications are processed, and the test is usually administered in the spring. (It is strongly recommended that you enroll in a test preparation course before taking any law enforcement exam. The competition is fierce, and in some cases a fraction of a point difference in grades could mean losing the chance at a job you want) The exams are then graded and lists are returned to the agencies ranking applicants by score.

    Chief's Agency Track
The agencies that don't utilize the NJ Department of Personnel have come to be known as Chief's Agencies. These departments administer the entry level testing themselves. A downside to this track is the fact that with most of the Chief's Agencies the testing is sporadic. They test when they are hiring, and you have to watch the newspapers and Internet for test announcements.

Highland Park school earns nutrition award

Highland Park Elementary School has been recognized with the Gold Award of Distinction by the U.S Department of Agriculture for its efforts in the HealthierUS School Challenge, according to Betsy Speer, Muscle Shoals city schools child nutrition program director.

Highland Park Principal Hal Horton said the award has special significance because it involves every student as well as all personnel and even parents.

“To receive the award, new menus were developed to include many more healthy foods, like whole grains, dark green and orange vegetables and fresh fruits,” Horton said. “Teachers are focusing on nutrition education using the creative and fun My Pyramid curriculum, and we're emphasizing physical activity throughout the school.”

Horton said the project carries over into the students' homes, where parents have gotten involved in helping their children keep logs of their healthy food choices and physical activity.

Last week, there was a schoolwide recognition ceremony where the school received $2,000, an award plaque and banner to display at the school.

The program's mascot, NutriBear, visited with students before the school day, congratulating them on their nutritional accomplishments.

“This is an exciting program for these students, and they've seen the rewards of making healthy food choices and being active,” Speer said. “We're starting this program with these younger children, first- and second-graders, in an effort to train their taste buds for healthy foods.”

    Zoo nutritionist’s recipe for success

Nutritionist Andrea Fidgett describes herself as the ‘Jamie Oliver’ of Chester Zoo.

But whereas the TV chef is currently dedicating himself to improving the health of the nation through better diet, Andrea has the health and well-being of more than 450 species to consider.

Dr Fidgett, who originally, studied Zoology at Glasgow University, is the only zoo nutritionist in the UK. “I was always interested in working with wild animals – exotic rather than native wild animals,” she said.

After graduating she was employed as a research assistant at Gerald Durrell’s zoo in Jersey. Her interest in nutrition was sparked when she was asked to undertake a study on the nutrition of the zoo’s parrots.

“It was then that I realised the fact that diets were often historical things that had worked and been passed on. They were not necessarily wrong but there had been no scientific approach or a study on nutrition involved.

“I realised this was a very small field and one which could lead to a career. I thought that maybe I could make a difference,” she said.

So Andrea went back to Glasgow to do a masters degree in animal nutrition and after graduating, eight years ago, was taken on by Chester Zoo as its first nutritionist.

“The science of nutrition was becoming more important. The zoo had just taken on its first full-time vet and saw that nutrition would be part and parcel of a health programme.”

ISSA Announces New Specialist in Fitness Nutrition Certification

In an effort to combat the highest levels of obesity the U.S. has ever seen, the ISSA developed the SFN certification to train personal trainers on how to educate their clients about sound nutrition principles.

"There is much confusion in the marketplace about nutrition, indicative of the increasing levels of overweight and obesity, reaching 70% of the US population," reports Dr. Sal Arria, CEO and founder of the ISSA. "The Specialist in Fitness Nutrition curriculum offers the fitness enthusiast and personal trainer a proper education, empowering them to become experts on a topic that raises much doubt and confusion."

In a society with an abundance of diet programs, including the South Beach diet, the Abs diet, Pritikin, Atkins, Liberation Diet, vegetarian or vegan, making a decision on a diet plan is no easy choice.

"Proper diet combined with a professionally designed and monitored fitness plan will help the client achieve their physical fitness and health objectives safely and efficiently. This is exactly why the Specialist in Fitness Nutrition (SFN) program will benefit personal trainers and ultimately the customers," says Dr. Arria.

In addition to the Specialist in Fitness Nutrition (SFN) curriculum, ISSA has six additional fitness education programs, responsible for educating nearly 125,000 personal trainers from over 85 countries. Three of the certification courses include; the Certified Fitness Trainer (CFT) course, which is ISSA's core personal training certification program, the Fitness Therapy (FT) certification for working with post physical therapy clients, the Specialist in Sports Conditioning (SSC) certification to train athletes, and the Specialist in Fitness for Older Adults (SFOA) certification for specialization in working with the aging baby boomer market.

    Dietician vs Nutritionist

A Nutritionist and a Dietician are health professionals who are experts in nutritional science and assist people in making decisions regarding their health and nutrition. Though they're often confused for being the same profession, but they differ in many respects. They both have different qualifications, different legal status as practitioners and differ in their scope of expertise.

     About

A Nutritionist is a health specialist who devotes professional activity to food and nutritional science, preventive nutrition, diseases related to nutrient deficiencies, and the use of nutrient manipulation to enhance the clinical response to human diseases. A Dietician is an expert in food and nutrition. Dieticians help promote good health through proper eating. They also supervise the preparation and service of food, develop modified diets, participate in research, and educate individuals and groups on good nutritional habits .

     Functions

While a dietician is mostly involved in curing diseases with dietary solutions, a nutritionist mostly consults on dietary problems and overall well being and is not considered legally qualified for treating health conditions (diseases).

A Dietician is often involved in finding and curing dietary and other food related problems with a person. A dietician's job relates with the over all health of a person starting with the right intake of food. They help in forming nutritional plans for patients and prevent illnesses by promoting healthy eating habits.

A Nutritionist has good knowledge of the nutrients of food and their relation with the health of a patient. They may also consult on dietary matters relating to over all well being.

     Qualification

Nutritionists have varying levels of education from someone with little or no education to an individual who has obtained a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree. Dieticians need at least a bachelor’s degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, food service systems management or a related area. The term  Registered Dietician (RD) is used in the US and any RD needs a degree in nutrition or dietetics, a six to 12-month internship at a healthcare facility, foodservice company or nonprofit agency approved by the  American Dietetic Association and successful completion of a national exam given by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

    Holistic Nutrition Degree Programs

Many people who are trying to live healthier lives are embracing holistic medicine.  Holistic medicine encompasses a large variety of healthy practices, including herbology, the study of how herbs from nature can help prevent and cure certain body ailments, and other more physical practices, such as yoga or acupuncture.  The medicines and treatments differ from traditional medicine in that there are no chemical created outside of what we find in nature used on the body.  This type of medicine also focuses mainly on the prevention of disease.

A big part of preventative medicine and health is how you treat your body.  Nutrition is part and parcel of the field of holistic medicine.  As many holistic nutritionists will tell you, the processed food made in America today can lead to a number of ailments, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and skin problems.  Those who practice holistic nutrition advocate eating natural foods such as nuts, fruits, and vegetables.

    Join the revolution, nutritionist urges

“Join the food revolution!” nutrition advocate Marion Nestle urged students and faculty as Linfield College’s 153rd year got under way.

“Food is about democracy,” she said. “It’s by the people, for the people. Grassroots, bottom-up.”

Nestle, whose work examines scientific, economic and social aspects of what we eat, said, “You have two choices — vote with your fork and make choices thoughtfully or change policy.”

She spoke Aug. 30 at the convocation marking the beginning of classes. Professors in academic regalia marched into Ted Wilson Gymnasium.

The audience included 555 freshmen. The new students make up Linfield’s biggest-ever freshman class.

Fifty-seven percent are female and 43 percent male. Fifty percent are from Oregon and 50 percent either from other points in the U.S. or one of a dozen foreign countries.

They have been preparing to start college at Linfield by reading Michael Pollen’s “In Defense of Food,” a book that will be discussed in their freshmen colloquium classes. With food and American consumption as the theme, Nestle — author of “Food Politics,” “Safe Food” and “What to Eat” — was chosen as convocation speaker.

Nestle works with every part of the food system, from production to consumption. But her principal focus is on nutrition and public health, her key issues including obesity, food safety and food insecurity.

The latter is a problem in much of the world, where food is scarce, but not so much in the U.S. “Obesity is a much more American problem,” she said.

Certified Clinical Nutritionists: Today's Complementary-Alternative Nutrition Professionals

In the late 1970s, when I first became involved in alternative healthcare, most nontraditional healing systems were unapproved by Western medicine. Traditional institutions did not understand them, and subsequently these methods remained on the fringes of healthcare. Although growing numbers of consumers were beginning to explore these methods, traditional thinkers maintained a firm opposition.

Now, more than 25 years later, the tide of acceptance is finally coming in. In 1999 alone, the scientific community granted the National Institutes of Health (NIH) $50 million to evaluate complementary-alternative medicine (CAM). In 2007 the appropriation for the NIH's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) was reported to be over $120 million. From this growth it is evident that traditional authorities can no longer ignore the benefits of natural healthcare. As studies supporting nontraditional approaches begin to flood medical literature, former skeptics are changing their views, and once-disparaged therapies are gaining serious recognition. The result is that alternative modalities are being elevated in esteem. They are now regarded as "complementary" or "integrative" therapies-healing methods that can synergistically blend with allopathic, mainstream medicine.

Although the struggles of complementary-alternative healthcare are far from over, enormous strides have been made. Political barriers continue to exist, but many mainstream institutions are attempting to understand nontraditional approaches. As they move forward, many of yesterday's critics are now seeking ways to learn about the very therapies they once refused to accept.

Completing a nutrition degree program in order to become a nutritionist is a step towards a long-term career in the health industry. Nutritionists are involved with helping others learn how to improve their lifestyle through diet and exercise, and many offer professional advice on a variety of health issues. A balanced nutrition program is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, but many people are unaware of the impact of diet, exercise, and optimal nutrition in their lives. Chefs and a nutritionist help Redskins stay strong and avoid unhealthful foods

Clinton Portis never cared much for broccoli, until he tried it Chef Mike style.

Portis, the 219-pound, 5-foot-11 veteran Redskins running back, hired private chef Michael Stevenson in March to help him shed some body fat before starting training camp in July. "I was looking for someone to help me get on a diet, a better eating program," says Portis, who had played at a heavier weight during previous seasons but wanted to be lean this year.

It's no secret that elite athletes have special dietary needs. But just how do the Redskins get the nutrients they need? It's not easy. For one thing, they eat a lot. Football players need double or triple the daily calories that most people do, and they must get enough from a healthful balance of carbs, lean proteins and fats to fuel grueling daily workouts and maintain energy during games, according to Jane Jakubczak, the Redskins' team nutritionist.

Finding a way to meet those energy needs is "quite a challenge," she says. "Their days are really scheduled, just like anybody else's." Fitting meals in between meetings and practices "is a full-time job." Plus, she says, it's important to "make sure their meals are performance-enhancing."

K-State Veterinarian Says Natural Foods Not Always Best for Pets

While natural food is a rising trend among humans, pet owners should be careful before feeding similar types of food to their pets, according to a Kansas State University veterinarian.

All too often pet owners assume that because certain foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are healthy for them, they are also healthy for their pets, said Susan Nelson, K-State assistant professor of clinical services.

"Natural and veggie-based pet foods are based more on market demand from owners, not because they are necessarily better for the pet," she said.

Natural pet food isn't necessarily unhealthy for pets, and there are good brands on the market. But cats and dogs have specific nutritional needs that some of these foods may not provide, Nelson said.

For instance, a natural dog food may provide antioxidants through fruits and vegetables, but it may be deficient in other nutrients the dog needs. If pet owners opt for natural pet food, it's important to make sure pets still receive a well-balanced diet, she said.

Before buying any pet food that is labeled natural, owners should make sure it comes from a reputable company. Nelson said the Association of American Feed Control Officials, or AAFCO, sets guidelines for the production, labeling and distribution of pet food and sets minimum standards for the nutritional adequacy of diets.

To ensure that food contains the proper nutrients a pet needs, pet owners should only buy pet food that has at least one of the two AAFCO nutritional adequacy statements on its label, Nelson said. The association's standards determine whether a pet food company's product is complete and balanced for a specific life stage according to one of two criteria: the diet's formula meets the minimum nutrient requirements established by the association or the diet has undergone association feeding trials.

Feeding trials, while not perfect, generally give the best assessment on how well the food performs for a specific life stage, Nelson said. Owners should look closely at the feeding statement on the label, as some foods are intended for intermittent feeding or only for specific life stages, and they could be detrimental to a pet if fed long-term.

    Nutrition Jobs

    What is a Nutritionist?

A Nutritionist is a health specialist with a focus on food and nutrition science, on diseases related to nutrition, preventive nutrition and clinical use of nutrients to improve patient responses to diseases.

Dietitians and Nutritionists are similar but not the same. Dietitians must be registered. There is no legal protection for the term nutritionist, nor is there a prescribed course of study for all to follow. Dietitians in community settings often have a nutritionist title. Their focus is healthy eating and wellness for all ages. Dietitians perform meal planning and food science tasks and work with kitchen staffs to create appropriate menus.

Nutritionists focus on a particular patient’s diet to create a nutritional supplement program. Their goal is to prevent disease, enhance treatment of a disease, or treat specific disorders that respond to nutritional therapy. A holistic approach is favored among most nutritionists.

    What Do Nutritionists Do?

Nutritionists work directly with individuals and families to develop nutritional care plans. They may review a person's medical history or laboratory tests, and physical examination findings to assess how to improve a patient's health. They often work closely with other health professionals.

Nutritionists use diet changes and specific types of nutritional supplementation based on an individual patient's needs. Nutritionists work to prevent and treat illnesses by promoting healthy eating habits and recommending dietary modifications. Nutritionists may offer advice on diet-related concerns such as weight loss or cholesterol reduction. Other nutritionists perform screenings for their clients.

Go directly to the source. There are many job boards on the Internet that allow you to search by job type and region, the problem is many nutrition job postings never make it onto these public websites. Most government-based jobs, academic jobs, nutrition jobs with large corporations and hospital jobs are first posted on the job board of that specific institution. If the job doesn't get filled then sometimes they are posted on more public sites.

Identify the places in your community that might offer nutrition jobs. These include universities, community colleges, local and state government, food companies, corporate or community fitness centers, supermarkets and healthcare networks. Find their website and then find their job board on the website. Regularly check the postings when you are seeking a nutrition job. If there is an option to sign up for new alerts or updates, make sure you do so. This way you will receive an email when new jobs post or when jobs post which match your area of expertise.
